Flashscore Rolls Out Innovative Player-Tracking Feature for Football Fans

Key Moments:

  • Flashscore has launched its new Follow Player function, providing real-time notifications on selected footballers.
  • Cristiano Ronaldo is currently the most-followed player globally, leading among nearly 590,000 profiled athletes.
  • The feature will expand to include basketball and hockey, with additional notification types planned.

Flagship App Enhancement for Fan Engagement

Flashscore, recognized as the leading live scores app worldwide, has introduced a Follow Player feature that enables users to receive instant alerts about their favorite footballers’ activities. After experiencing high user demand from its monthly audience exceeding 100 million, the company describes this launch as its “flagship app enhancement of 2025.”

Users are now able to select up to 100 players to follow, receiving the same notification types available for teams. The system delivers real-time updates on appearances in starting lineups, goals, substitutions, red cards, and post-match ratings. Upcoming updates will broaden alerts to include assists, yellow cards, missed penalties, and transfers. Expansion is also planned to basketball and hockey.

Comprehensive Stats and Fan Preferences

To deepen user experience, Flashscore has broadened its available statistics with player-focused metrics such as expected goals (xG), passing accuracy, and duels won.

Recent user engagement data shows that out of nearly 590,000 players in Flashscore’s database, 350,000 users selected at least one player to follow in the past month. On average, each user tracks six players, resulting in around 2 million player favorites within the inaugural month.

Strategic Launch During Major Event

Flashscore is unveiling the Follow Player feature ahead of the Legends Charity Game between Portugal Legends and World Legends in Lisbon. The app is the official strategic partner for the match, which will feature renowned former players, such as Luis Figo, Kaka, and Carles Puyol. The platform will supply users with real-time updates during the event using Opta data from Stats Perform.

The game, held at Sporting’s Estádio José Alvalade and organized by Sport Global, aims to raise €1m for charitable causes and acts as a prelude to the SBC Summit iGaming conference.

Company Perspective and Next Steps

Tomáš Pondělík, Chief Product Officer at Flashscore, said: “This is our flagship app enhancement of the year. Fandom is evolving and we’re seeing a significant shift from fans following only their favourite teams to a deeper interest in individual players. Our community has been asking for this feature for some time but we wanted to launch it at the right moment, when we had the strongest player data on the market and a clear understanding of what fans expect. That’s why we focused on delivering fast, non-intrusive notifications during live matches, without cluttering their feed.

“We also know fans crave real insights, so we’re already working on adding more meaningful player data – from pre-match previews and live statistics to post-match ratings – giving them a richer understanding of performance. With Follow Player, fans can finally track their football heroes in real time, and this is just the beginning. We’ll be expanding to basketball and hockey later this year, alongside more notification types and new ways to explore upcoming fixtures.”
