Growing Demand for Gambling Support
GambleAware’s latest findings indicate a marked increase in the number of UK adults looking to either reduce or abstain from gambling. Over five million adults have expressed interest in making a change, encompassing not just those with serious gambling problems, but also individuals who do not currently consider themselves at high risk.
According to Anna Hargrave, Chief Executive at GambleAware, this large group signals the fundamental need for a wide array of support services. She emphasized the importance of the National Gambling Support Network in meeting the rising demand for assistance.
Younger Adults Leading the Change
The data highlights that adults between the ages of 18 and 34 are a significant driving force behind the trend. Roughly one in three individuals in this age group who gamble have indicated a desire to gamble less or stop entirely. While gambling participation appears to be rising among younger adults, the overall rate of gambling-related harm remains stable. This has increased attention on early intervention tools.
Increased Engagement with Support Tools
More individuals are accessing support at earlier stages than in the past. Since July of last year, over 42,000 people have engaged with GambleAware’s Service Finder to seek help. Of these, more than 13,000 continued through to connect directly with a support provider.
Launched in April 2023, the National Gambling Support Network brings together 13 organizations, offering various forms of assistance, from individualized sessions to residential programs. The Service Finder plays a key role in directing users to appropriate resources.
Use of the Self Assessment tool has also grown, with more than 87,000 completions since April 2023. This tool delivers tailored advice and refers users to free, confidential support, serving as an initial step for many before seeking more direct help.
Additionally, nearly 6,000 people have used the Spend Calculator since its debut in December 2023. This feature enables individuals to monitor their gambling expenditure and time commitment, providing guidance aligned with the Lower Risk Gambling Guidelines.
| Support Tool | Launch Date | Usage to Date |

Guidelines for Safer Gambling
The Lower Risk Gambling Guidelines are built on three clear rules:
- Limit gambling spend to no more than one percent of monthly income.
- Engage in gambling on up to four days per month only.
- Use no more than two types of gambling products per month.
These recommendations have been integrated into a variety of GambleAware’s support tools for ease of adoption.
Transitioning to a Statutory Model
The UK’s approach to addressing gambling harm is undergoing restructuring, with a statutory system set to be fully operational by April 2026. GambleAware is actively collaborating with new commissioners to ensure service continuity during this transition.
Hargrave conveyed a message of reassurance: “However, gambling is making you feel, there is help available,” she says. “Wherever you are in your journey… help and support continue to be available… For free advice, tools, and support, visit gambleaware.org.”
A Shift in Public Health Awareness
The report makes clear that more people are seeking assistance at earlier stages than before. This trend reflects an evolving perspective in the UK, treating gambling as a significant public health concern, akin to responsible management of spending, drinking, or online activity.
