France Unveils Fully Digital Self-Exclusion Platform for Gamblers

Key Moments:

  • The French regulator ANJ has launched a redesigned, fully digital national gambling self-exclusion register
  • Participants can now enroll online and activate their exclusion within 24 hours
  • Since 2021, the number of registrants has more than doubled, reaching over 85,000

Modernization of Player Protection

France’s gambling authority, l’Autorité Nationale des Jeux (ANJ), has introduced a new fully digital version of the national self-exclusion registry, Interdiction Volontaire. This initiative aims to streamline the registration process and reinforce identity verification measures for individuals seeking to restrict their gambling activity.

Previously, the system required in-person visits to a police station, where registrants completed paperwork, presented identification, and were interviewed. Originally limited to land-based casinos and gaming clubs, the register expanded its reach after online sports betting and poker were legalized in 2010. ANJ assumed oversight of the program in 2020 and committed to updating the system and broadening its coverage to support responsible gambling practices.

Simplified Digital Registration Process

ANJ has called the latest overhaul “the most significant update to France’s player-protection regime since the programme was created,” citing improvements in speed, accessibility, and security for those seeking exclusion. Registration is now conducted entirely online at interdictiondejeux.anj.fr. Participants must verify their identity and complete a dynamic selfie using IDnow. Upon submission, confirmation that exclusion is active should be received within one day.

Planned Enhancements for 2026

ANJ has outlined plans to introduce personalized user accounts in 2026. These new accounts will enable users to access relevant documents, monitor exclusion status, and request the lifting of self-exclusion after the minimum three-year period. In addition, a call-back system will be established to collect user feedback and deliver ongoing support.

Trends in Self-Exclusion Registration

The number of individuals registered has experienced substantial growth, more than doubling from 40,000 in 2021 to over 85,000. Over the past two years, registrations have risen by 25 percent, with 19,000 new sign-ups recorded in 2024.
