Alberta Sets a New Standard for Online Betting Integrity Oversight

Key Moments:

  • Alberta approved the International Betting Integrity Association as an official integrity monitor ahead of its online gambling market launch.
  • Approximately 30 sportsbook and casino operators are expected to enter Alberta’s market as it opens on July 13.
  • IBIA tracked 70 suspicious betting alerts globally in Q1 2026, with North America accounting for 20% of the total.

Regulated Market Launch with Enhanced Compliance

Alberta is preparing to open its regulated online gambling market, introducing enhanced integrity oversight from day one. The province has officially approved the International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA) as its recognized integrity monitor, allowing the organization to oversee suspicious wagering activity as soon as sportsbooks go live on July 13.

With this approval, operators launching in Alberta will have access to IBIA’s monitoring and alert systems, woven into the province’s broader compliance efforts. IBIA will collaborate closely with the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission, identifying unusual betting patterns and raising concerns related to possible match manipulation or betting fraud.

Competitive Launch Environment

The Alberta market launch is among the most significant expansions for regulated online betting in Canada since Ontario opened its market in 2022. Around 30 sportsbook and casino providers are positioned to join the province immediately, fueling a highly competitive landscape where the drive to attract new customers will be intense from the beginning.

This operator roster includes established brands such as FanDuel, DraftKings, BetRivers, Betway, and theScore, alongside the government-operated Play Alberta platform.

Proactive Approach to Integrity Monitoring

IBIA highlighted Alberta’s framework as exemplary for newly regulated betting markets, citing requirements for operator obligations and systematic information sharing between regulators and integrity organizations. The approach, which IBIA advocates globally, aims to mitigate manipulation risks that can emerge as online wagering activity grows.

Central to these efforts is IBIA’s Monitoring & Alert Platform (MAP). This system tracks betting activity across various sports and operators, identifying anomalies indicative of suspicious behavior. Alerted issues may be shared with regulators, sportsbooks, sports governing bodies, or law enforcement as deemed appropriate.

North America’s Increasing Significance in Global Integrity Efforts

With Alberta’s market opening, IBIA strengthens its North American presence, building on its operations in Ontario. North America has become a key region for global integrity monitoring, according to IBIA’s 2026 integrity data.

North America represented 20% of all suspicious betting alerts registered by IBIA; Europe led with 28%. In terms of sports, tennis and mixed martial arts produced the highest number of alerts in North America, with integrity analysts keeping a close watch on lower-tier tennis and combat sports events.
