Italian Prosecutors Probe Alleged Slot Machine Scheme Involving Regulator Leak

Key Moments:

  • Italian authorities placed precautionary measures on 15 suspects across Cosenza.
  • Investigators seized 145 modified slot machines and roughly €80,000 in cash.
  • An ADM official allegedly leaked inspection dates to help operators hide illegal hardware.

Widespread Investigation Targets Alleged Manipulation and Insider Leaks

Italian prosecutors are investigating a network that allegedly ran a major slot machine fraud scheme. The group tampered with gaming machines, hid betting income, and bribed an official at the Customs and Monopolies Agency (ADM).

Consequently, Cosenza prosecutors and Carabinieri police officers placed 15 individuals under precautionary restrictions. Currently, two suspects remain under house arrest, while officials banned the remaining individuals from working in the gaming industry.

Furthermore, prosecutors charge the network with corruption, tax fraud, illegal disclosure of secrets, and organized crime.

Identification and Seizure of Altered Slot Machines

The investigation started after analysts detected abnormal betting patterns in online slot machines. Therefore, police expanded their inquiry into modified machines and corruption, which cost the state millions in lost taxes.

Specifically, auditors spotted major data discrepancies in numerous Amusement With Prizes (AWP) devices connected to the national network. As a result, officers raided venues throughout Cosenza province and confiscated 145 tampered slot machines. In addition, police seized about €80,000 in cash during these operations.

Technicians discovered that suspects installed illegal circuit boards alongside official components inside the devices. Using secret wiring, remote controllers, and timing chips, operators bypassed state monitoring systems. Thus, they routed a portion of gambling revenue off the books.

In a related prior action, authorities seized over €12 million from a major operator who evaded gambling taxes.

Alleged Official Involvement and Removal of Seized Components

Meanwhile, prosecutors highlight serious charges against a Cosenza ADM official. This insider routinely tipped off operators before scheduled venue checks. Consequently, managers removed illicit parts and restored the machines to legal compliance right before inspectors arrived.

Additionally, the corrupt official allegedly stole previously confiscated parts from ADM storage facilities. The network then reformatted these parts and reinstalled them into active slot machines.

Recent Seizures Unveil Broader Patterns in Italian Gaming

This operation follows another recent case where Italian officers seized €25 million in illegal assets. That earlier case involved a scratchcard fraud scheme surrounding four winning tickets worth €24 million. In that instance, former gaming company employees used confidential data to steal high-value tickets before public distribution.
