Sports Betting Performance Remains Strong Amid Revenue Decline

New Jersey’s sportsbooks recorded more than $1 billion in bets during January, maintaining a streak that has now reached five consecutive months. The vast majority of wagers were placed through online and mobile platforms, while physical sportsbook locations contributed $35.2 million to the overall handle.

Despite this robust activity, sportsbook revenue slipped compared to the previous year. The Division of Gaming Enforcement reported January earnings at $114.2 million, a decrease from $122.2 million in January 2025 – representing a 6.5% decline. The hold percentage from completed sporting events was 10.7%, nearly the same as December’s results. Sports betting generated $23.9 million in tax revenue for the state during January.

Operators’ Revenue Breakdown

Both experienced a revenue drop of approximately 14% compared with January of the previous year, yet together accounted for nearly 68% of the state’s total sportsbook revenue.

Online casinos played a major role in this growth, generating $258.9 million in January. Although this figure was solid, it trailed December’s monthly record of $273.2 million. Revenue from land-based casinos remained nearly constant, improving just 1.6% year-over-year.

In the online casino segment, FanDuel Casino reported $58.9 million in revenue, an 18.5% increase over last year. DraftKings Casino earned $48.6 million for the month, up 10.3% from the same period in the previous year.
