Key Moments:
- DraftKings has announced plans to enter the Alberta igaming sector when the market opens, subject to regulatory approval.
- Alberta’s igaming market is scheduled to launch on July 13.
- The Alberta government will receive 20% of net igaming revenue, following allocations for First Nations and social responsibility funding.
Growing Competition in Alberta’s iGaming Sector
DraftKings has confirmed intentions to introduce its online sportsbook and casino to Alberta’s new competitive igaming market. The company joins a number of major brands looking to debut when the market opens on July 13, pending the necessary licensing and regulatory clearances.
Several prominent operators, including FanDuel, BetMGM, PointsBet Canada, BetRivers, Betway, NorthStar, and Betty, are also expected to launch on or shortly after this date.
DraftKings’ Expansion and Market Reach
DraftKings stated that, pending relevant approvals, it will make its sportsbook and online casino available to Alberta customers beginning July 13.
“We’re excited about the opportunity to expand DraftKings’ footprint in Canada and bring our online sportsbook and casino experiences to customers in Alberta,” said Greg Karamitis, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Sports at DraftKings.
“With the anticipated launch aligning with the World Cup — hosted right here in North America — it’s a particularly exciting moment for sports fans in the province to engage with our platform.”
Alberta will become the 34th jurisdiction in North America where DraftKings operates online sports betting, as well as the seventh with an online casino offering.
Regulatory Structure and Revenue Distribution
This launch will mark DraftKings’ second Canadian jurisdiction, following its entry into Ontario in May 2022 soon after Ontario introduced a similar open market. Ontario currently hosts 48 licensed operators and 82 gaming websites, with over $4 billion in net revenue in 2025, according to iGaming Ontario.
Under Alberta’s new regulatory framework, the Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC) will supervise the online gambling market, while the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC) agency is tasked as the market regulator.
According to the province’s policy, 20% of net igaming revenue will be directed to the government after allocations for First Nations and social responsibility, which together represent 3% of gross gaming revenue.
